We have all been there; nervously sitting in a chair, waiting for our name to be called. Job interviews can be one of the most stressful things that we have to do. Whether it is your first or one hundredth interview, everyone needs a little help to make it easier. So here are four tips in surviving an interview.

1. Make sure your Resume looks good. Most employers seriously look through every resume that goes through their system. To make sure it looks pleasing to the eye, check for any grammar issues. It might help if you ask someone to proofread it before turning it in.  If they say everything looks good, then you are ready send it in.  However, if you want to do it yourself, then check out Grammarly. It is a free website to help you correct writing errors.

2. Dress appropriately. This one should be a given. You will have a higher rate of getting hired if you dress to impress. Even if it is for a minimum wage job, you should always look professional and clean. You will also get taken more seriously if you do. Make sure your outfit is wrinkle-free as well, it goes a long way!   Men should wear a nice suit or a polo with khaki pants. Women should wear a nice top with a below the knee skirt, slacks or a professional dress. These are just some examples of outfits you should try to wear. Do avoid flip flops and shorts.

3. First impression should be your best. After waiting what feels like an eternity, your name has finally been called. Your first impression should make a lasting one. The employer might offer a handshake, so be sure to give a firm one. Do not take a seat until they offer you one. When answering their questions make sure you keep eye contact. Eye contact is a sign that you are confident in yourself, and what you are saying. Make sure to say Sir or Ma’am, unless they give you permission to say their name. In addition, you should also speak clearly. Try your best not to say words like “Um” or “Yeah”. It makes you sound unsure of what you are saying.

4. Be patient!!! You are finally done with the interview. Congratulations, you made it through! Most employers contact people back within a week. If you haven’t heard anything, try calling the company just to see if they have made a decision. Not all companies like this, so check with them during your interview to see what the follow up procedure is like. Some companies will still contact you whether you got the job or not. If that is the case, then there is no need to call them. The only thing left for you to do is sit back and wait.
